Harwick was born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, in 1981. She graduated from West Chester University with a degree in psychology and then went on to earn a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from Pepperdine University.
After graduating, Harwick worked as a sex therapist in Los Angeles. She was known for her work with celebrities and other high-profile clients. She also wrote a book, "The Truth About Love: How To Find And Keep It", which was published in 2017.
In 2018, Harwick filed a restraining order against Pursehouse, who she had been dating for two years. She accused him of physical and emotional abuse. Pursehouse denied the allegations, but the restraining order was granted.
In February 2020, Harwick was found dead at the bottom of her third-floor balcony. She had been strangled and thrown from the balcony. Pursehouse was arrested and charged with her murder. He is currently awaiting trial.
The defense for Gareth Pursehouse, the man charged with killing Hollywood sex therapist Amie Harwick, suggested in court on Tuesday that she may have fallen from her balcony while fleeing him.
Pursehouse is accused of pushing Harwick off her third-floor balcony in the early hours of February 15, 2020. Harwick, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene.
In court on Tuesday, Pursehouse's attorney, Michael Goldstein, argued that Harwick may have fallen while trying to escape Pursehouse after he had become angry with her. Goldstein said that there was no evidence that Pursehouse had pushed Harwick, and that the prosecution's case was based on speculation.
The prosecution, however, argued that there was clear evidence that Pursehouse had killed Harwick. They pointed to the fact that Pursehouse had been seen arguing with Harwick on the balcony shortly before her death, and that he had scratches on his hands and arms that they said were consistent with a physical struggle.
The judge is expected to rule on whether Pursehouse will stand trial later this month.
If convicted of murder, Pursehouse faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The case has drawn attention to the issue of violence against women, and Harwick's death has been a rallying cry for those who are working to prevent it.
In the wake of Harwick's death, the Los Angeles City Council passed a measure that requires landlords to install security features such as peepholes and deadbolts in apartments where domestic violence has been reported.
The measure is named after Harwick, and it is intended to make it more difficult for abusers to harm their victims.
Harwick's death was a tragic loss for her family, friends, and clients. She was a talented therapist who was dedicated to helping others. Her death is a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help if you are experiencing abuse.
